Ubuntu is an African philosophy often expressed through the phrase:
“A person is a person through other people.”
Within healthcare leadership, Ubuntu reminds us that leadership is measured not only by individual achievement but also by what leaders make possible in the people, teams, and systems around them.
Ubuntu-informed leadership complements evidence-informed leadership by emphasizing relationships, trust, collaboration, and shared responsibility.
Ubuntu-informed leadership integrates contemporary leadership science with the relational values of Ubuntu.
Rather than viewing leadership as individual authority alone, it recognises that sustainable leadership grows through strong relationships, mutual accountability, compassion, and collective success.
Many physicians seek coaching because documentation, competing priorities, administrative demands, and leadership responsibilities have become overwhelming.
While coaching does not replace workflow redesign or technical training, it can help leaders identify patterns, strengthen decision-making, establish boundaries, improve delegation, and develop more sustainable ways of working.
Where appropriate, practical productivity resources and leadership tools are incorporated into coaching.
